Things I Didn’t Know About Airports

Once you are all checked in and heading to your gate, why is there always sometime running past you, even when you are “steppin’ lively” on the moving sidewalk?

There can be a very long distance between terminals.  Okay, I knew this.  Airports are not all like the one in Crescent City, CA, where one employee sells you your ticket and then throws your bag in the plane.  Most airports are really big to accommodate the really big planes that fly in and out of their facilities constantly. 

I have even at times had to transfer from a big plane to a little plane (to get from a big place to a little place) and have had to take a bus out to the little plane part of the airport from the big plane part.  This, I once believed, certified me as a seasoned traveler.   

Flying internationally is new to me, however.  There are a lot more seasonings out there than salt and pepper!  Arriving at Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris today at the end of my trip, I was surprised to find that my connecting flight at Heathrow in London was going to be a hard one for me to catch.  Not only will I get in at a different terminal  than the one I’ll need to get to for my transfer, but I will have to go through security again.  The estimated time to get from one terminal to the next is 90 minutes, which I’m hoping is very much exaggerated.  Additionally I’m told I need to pick up a new boarding pass at the counter, and of course find the right gate.  Okay, okay.  

And get to the gate at least twenty minutes before the next flight leaves.

I wish I would have worn my running shoes.

Update:  My London plane was delayed by more than four hours.  I made my connection just fine…
