What the?

One of my favorite refrains from a book I read this year was "What the?"  If you haven't read it, you should probably read it before you see the movie, which I've heard is soon to be released and will star Tom Hanks and, maybe, but don't quote me, that Pretty Woman.  The book is Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close- a YA miracle, or at least, a really good book.  With the recent Osama news, it becomes an even more appropriate read.  But I don't watch the news.

What the?, however, rings true!  I look at my life today and it is an arrangement mostly planned--meticulous, one might say.  I spend my free time reading, gardening, cleaning the house, and thinking about writing.  What the?  There's so little free time that I'm unwilling to squander it on writing?  My greatest private satisfaction?  It's a conundrum.

I'm perfectly willing to spend time and gasoline after school running after students who ditch me...  What the?  Is it because if I stay busy with work, or the pursuit of work, I won't require anything new of myself in the way of writing?  And, how come I'm not with my writing group right now?  This is our slot, our carved out time.

I'm just sitting here listening to a woodpecker outside the window and my husband and brother and I'm sure I hear my neighbor and our friend Sean in the mix... outside on the deck, talking.  And I'm writing about not writing.

What the?
